In order to get the maximum performance from an aircraft engine, a variable pitch or constant speed propellor really does wonders. It enables the pilot to run the engine at high rpm to get maximum horsepower when climbing, and reduce rpm for lower fuel consumption, wear, vibration and noise output in cruise.
This is nothing new, and in fact any high performance aircraft, be it a fast one or a heavy hauler, uses a constant speed prop. Until recently, however, constant speed props were heavy and extremely expensive items. Facts that placed them out of range for light aviation.
In recent years a few companies have started to produce lighter, lower cost constant speed propellors. One of the most well-known of these companies is Quinti avio. Quinti produces electrically controlled propellor hubs that are machined out of solid pieces of aluminium, and fits these out with warp drive blades. Coupled to a computer controller that can be programmed to suit your aircraft and senses what flight mode the aircraft is in (climb, economy cruise, fast cruise, final, etc.), adjusting the pitch accordingly, the Quinti prop is as easy to fly as a fixed pitch propellor. This programmable feature is years ahead of the old style mechanically controlled constant speed propellors, and Quinti is as of yet the only company that offers the fully programmable pitch change mechanism.
